CHOOSING YARN

This year’s mystery KAL uses 3 colors. I recommend using solid, semi-solid or speckled yarn like the beautiful colors from Baah, Zen, Huasco, or Dragonfly.

Color A

Think about color A as the main color, the leading role in the shawl. This could be speckled or multi- color yarn or a beautiful neutral. It has space to shine. If you want to use a self-striping yarn then I recommend using it as color A.

Color A needs a buddy so along comes Color B.

Color B is an accent color. It needs to offer some contrast to Color A. Think about a pop of color or something brighter or darker than Color A.

Color C joins the party fashionably late. It’s a color that demands to be featured.  This could be a bold sassy color or something dark and dramatic.

Try to avoid 3 colors that look very similar like 3 shades of light blue or 3 busy multi-colors. If the colors are very similar they will blend together. Instead, choose a light, medium and dark color for your trio of 3 colors that offer different personalities.

KNITS BY NANA NEWSLETTER MAY 2016

Things are beginning to happen at Knits By Nana. The gloom of winter has passed and the excitement of Spring and Summer is building. It wont be long before we are having family celebrations, going off to camp or planning that big vacation of a lifetime.

Exciting events will be coming to your local yarn store as well. In June, we are pleased to once again be participating in another Yarn Crawl. Stores included will be in New Orleans, Lacombe, Diamondhead and Lafayette. It will be held during the month of June through the first week of July. This will provide plenty of time to make plans to participate. There will be a drawing for a Grand Prize for those customers that make it to every store as well as project ideas, patterns and surprises at each store. Last year was very successful for all of us. It gave us the opportunity to meet lots of people from the surrounding areas.

We hosted a Classic Elite yarn tasting this past month. Featured yarns and patterns were available using Fortuna, Bella Lino, Soft Linen and Firefly. Some entertaining games were held and delicious refreshments were provided.

The Sock Rulers have arrived! We have been patiently awaiting their arrival. This is the neatest device to use for measurements during knitting socks. You will wonder how you ever knit without it.

Hempathy is back in some stunning new colors. This is a DK weight yarn that is a blend of cotton, linen and rayon fibers. It is an excellent price for your next project. We have some really cute ideas for patterns such as Kat Coyes Linen Top or the Summer Shawl. Both patterns can be found on Ravelry.

New yarns expected soon:

Madeline Tosh and Calista by Classic Elite Yarns. Calista is a new product available this summer. It is mercerized cotton in a chainette construction.

One of our newer yarns is Zooey by Juniper Farms. This fiber is delightful to knit with and comes in a variety of beautiful colors. Many customers have been knitting the Cancun top with 2 skeins of Zooey. This garment is so simple but makes such a fashion statement.

The featured yarn this month is Modern Cotton. It is a great yarn to make a quick washcloth to give with a beautiful bar of soap for those end of year or shower gifts.

There is also a pattern for an easy top to knit with 2 or 3 skeins on a US 13 needle. Its called Quadra Tank and is available on Ravelry for $1.99. Perfect for summer

Blocking Class

June 16th 12pm to 1pm
We are holding this class in preparation for

implementation of our new Blocking Policy.
The following Blocking Policy will be implemented

effective June 20, 2016.

Small projects

ie.scarf, cowl, small garments or childs garment $10 up

Adult garments

ie. Sweater, tops, or intricate pattern.

$20 up

We have found it necessary to implement this policy as Blocking is a very labor intensive process that requires an extensive amount of staff time.

KNITTING TIPS

BEGINNING A ROW

Slip the first stitch of every Knit or Purl row. It makes a cleaner salvage

RIBBING

Knit the first row then change to the ribbing pattern.

SLIPPING STITCHES

Always slip a stitch as if to purl unless the pattern indicates otherwise.

KNITTING ON AN AIRPLANE
Yes
, we can usually take our knitting on the plane, but here's some advice to make for less hassles.

You won't want to take huge or long needles and you wouldn't want to take a big project.

Take a small project like a scarf, hat, sox or mittens are easier to work on in a small airplane seat..
